Winter is right around the corner. One thing to be mindful of is that frosty weather can have an adverse impact on excavators, much the same way it has an impact on cars. We recommend following essential winter excavator maintenance practices to ensure your equipment remains operable and to avoid costly repairs and downtime.
1. Apply Oil and Lubricant
Excavators have an oil dipstick that can be checked the same way you check the oil in a regular car. As a general rule, if you pull out the dipstick, and the oil drips, then it’s still in good condition. No dripping means the oil is hardening and turning into sludge. We always perform an oil check on all of our excavators before releasing them for rent.
2. Inspect Hydraulic Hoses
Hydraulic hoses last between 7,000 and 9,000 hours of use. However, cold weather can stress the rubber tubing, causing it to become brittle and stiff. Hot hydraulic oil flowing through the tube's interior can lead to further erosion. Inspect for cracks and brittleness as part of a pre-operation inspection.
3. Warm Up the Machine
Let the engine run for several minutes before operation. This minimizes shock to the components from cold fluids running through the system. It helps to cycle the controls, including moving the boom all the way up and down once or twice. This helps get the oil flowing as it warms up.
4. Check the Environment
Apart from the excavator itself, you also need to be mindful of the work area. Ground frost, for instance, may place additional stress on breakers and hoe packs or other attachments. The tracks may also struggle in maintaining traction when the ground is wet or iced over.
